The Provocateur drama was saved by actor Lee Sing Cheong
TVB's drama Provocateur (與諜同謀) was a long awaited drama before airing because the cast included with Hong Kong viewer's favourite, Gallen Lo (羅嘉良). After the drama was aired, many of the cast was not many of the viewers favourite. Gallen who has returned after being absent from TVB for 7 years, were laughed at being old and even running out of breath when saying his lines. Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘) who plays his son, was also criticized by online netizens for being young and his lack of acting experience to be the main character. Ali Lee (李佳芯) was also criticized for having the same expression, but luckily the drama had veteran actor Lee Sing Cheong (李成昌). He was being praised when he first appeared and very cute when he is a villain. He was described as a magic pen who saved the drama.
In the drama Lee Sin Cheong plays Qian Wing Tong, an enemy to Gallen Lo and also competitors. Although he competes with Gallen Lo, but always loses. There was a scene where Qian Wing Tong holds a charity ball, and at the event whoever donates the most money can take the first dance. However, the song for the dance was secretly changed by Gallen Lo's character and cannot follow the beat of the music. He later falls to the floor in embarrassment. In fact, he is being used by Gallen Lo at most times, therefore he can never get along with Gallen. Instead he cooperates with Fred Cheng. Lee Sing Cheong may not be as good looking as Gallen and Fred, but he has indeed stole the spotlight for his acting. Many online netizens left messages saying "it is funny to hear him say the wrong phrase", "Luckily we still have him", "Looks like he has taken over Fred Cheng", "It is unexpected".
Lee Sing Cheong accepted an interview with Hong Kong 01 and denied taking the spotlight in the drama: "I am not stealing the spotlight. I am just doing what I need to do. The producer does not want too much of the competitiveness and instead wants to add a little something funny. No matter what roles are given to me, I must always do a good job. Do not step on the borderline, don't be too much and don't be too little. As long as the results are good at the end and everyone is happy". In the drama Provocateur, Lee Sing Cheong is often been made fun of and doesn't seem to be like a villain character. Has he deliberately changed his style of character? You wouldn't say deliberately changed. I'm only showing a few skills here and there when playing a villain role. The producer will choose which skills look better on screen.
The name Lee Sing Cheong may be unfamiliar to many people, but those who hasn't seen his acting does not know his characters are usually unique, sneaky and a villain. 59 year old Lee Sing Cheong, entered TVB acting class around 1979 and in his class was also Kent Tong. When Lee Sing Cheong debuted he was placed in a long drama called Hong Kong 81 (香港81), playing a new migrant named Hong Jai. He played the character for 6 years and when he was out on the streets, citizens will first call him Hong Jai, later Hong Gor, more years have passed Hong Uncle. As his role grew over the years, he was a representative for new immigrants.
Filming 6 years of a long drama, he finally had more opportunities for more dramas and at that time he was 29 years old. It was also his golden age in acting with many fadans rising in fame, but Lee Sing Cheong chose to keep acting in supporting roles. Luckily with his supporting roles he left a deep impression for viewers. Many people most recognize him from Heart of Greed (溏心風暴) playing Seung Joi Duk, a wretched villain. He was also Sai Kai Susanna Kwan's lover. Viewers were angered with his character when watching him. Currently viewers see a different side of him in his current drama and his acting is outstanding. The new Heart of Greed 3 (溏心風暴3) will air next year and Lee Sing Cheong will play the father's younger cousin and Michelle Yim's right hand man, but also a villain. A villain can be violent and bloody, frightening and make viewers quiver. In the recent years, his villain roles have a slight change. When his first scene appears on television, viewers immediately know he plays the villain role and also realises he deserves what he gets at the towards the end of the drama. Not only is Lee Sing Cheong a TVB actor, but also an acting instructor for TVB. In 2012, he won the Outstanding Artist award at the 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards. He is not only known for his great acting, but also being praised for his contribution to the entertainment industry.
